Behind the Scenes.... The Cover
This was the very last page to be designed, because I wanted to see all the finished illustrations for inspiration to create the cover. And, of course once Lauren created those yummy purple clouds, I knew they had to be on the cover. It took me forever to come up with a title for the book. As it would happen, it was a conversation I was having with my husband on a trip to NYC that he gave me the idea.
Behind the Scenes.... Jet getting dressed
Jet getting dressed shows how he is in a big hurry (and not so organized) to get out the door to start his day with Scoot. The angle of a bird’s eye view looking down on Jet took some time. I knew I really wanted to see Jet’s clothes flying all over his room, and this point of view which Lauren came up with worked perfectly. His clothes flying up in the air at the reader.
Behind the Scenes.... Scoot getting dressed
Truth be told, how Scoot’s outfit is laid out is something I did as a little tyke. Even at 4 years old, I had to plan out my outfit before going to bed for school the next day. As my grandmother told me, I laid out my entire outfit on my bed every night before going to sleep.
Behind the Scenes.... Riding through town
Riding through town is so fun because it’s the official start of Jet & Scoot’s Adventure-Saturday and the excitement of the day together. And, each building’s name has a special meaning.
Jake’s Deli – has a double meaning, first it’s named after my son who helped me edit my manuscript many times. Secondly as Jake stated during one of our editing sessions, “mom, you have to have a deli on the corner,” I knew I had to name it after him for all his help.
Café Joce – is named in honor of Jake’s friend Jocelyn who edited my first manuscript.
Sweetie Pie’s Ice Cream Shop – Sweetie Pie was my grandmother’s nickname for me, and I can’t remember a day growing up that she didn’t say it to me.
The Corner Book Store – is for my love of bookstores, books and a super fun way to see my own book in the store window.
Behind the Scenes.... Scoot fixing the engine box
This page is very special because it was the first completed and final illustration for the book. It was the best feeling of accomplishment and showed what great creative ideas Lauren and I could do together for the rest of the illustrations of the book. It was Lauren’s creative idea to have the reader’s viewpoint from above.
Behind the Scenes.... Purple clouds
These darling fun clouds were Lauren’s idea, which enhanced the world of Jet & Scoot. It was a wonderful surprise to see those purple clouds when Lauren sent them to me.
